2024-TUMAN Peace Island Community Temple King Boat Festival
Mazu and Wangye are the main beliefs of the coastal people of Taiwan. It is said that there is a Wangye temple for every seven temples in Taiwan. In the blue sea of Keelung, the belief in Wangye plays an important role, bringing blessings and peace to the local fishermen. Every year around the birthday of Wangye in June of the lunar calendar, a series of celebrations will be held, such as welcoming Wangye and Wangye's sea parade. Among them, the "Sea Wangye Festival" held by Heping Island Sheling Temple and Waimushan Xie'an Temple is particularly grand. Because the birthdays of the main gods of the temples, Wangye, are different, the two temples will hold parade activities one after another.
Heping Island, formerly known as Sheliao Island (Tuman in the aboriginal language), is the earliest developed area in Keelung, with a history of more than 400 years. The belief in Wangye has also taken root here for hundreds of years. Every year on the 15th day of the sixth lunar month, which is the birthday of Wangye, a "tour" ceremony of the three prefectures Wangye will be held. The Wangye will go out to sea and patrol the river on a Wangye boat to eliminate evil spirits and bless the fishermen with a good harvest, and also to provide relief to lonely ghosts.
The annual ceremony not only includes a sea parade, but the king will also go out on a road inspection, which is called "traveling on the river". The king's boat will travel through the streets and alleys of Heping Island to protect the local residents. It is an important celebration for the residents to pray for peace. It is held regularly every year and has become an important religious activity for local residents. This year, it successfully landed on the land of folk intangible cultural assets under the name of "Heping Island King's Sea Tour".
